Producer Jim Sampas worked together with film director Curt Worden to seek out artists with an affinity for Kerouac. They discovered that Kerouac's writings have been one of Farrar's greatest inspirations. His unique interpretation of Big Sur emulates Kerouac's spontaneous writing method with his poetic sense of urgency. Gibbard's vocal approach to Kerouac's thoughts and experiences from five decades past directly transports listeners to these troubled moments in Big Sur.
